Heritage Conservation Districts

What is an HCD?

The Ontario Heritage Act enables Toronto City Council to designate Heritage Conservation Districts (HCD) under Part V of the Act.

An HCD is a designated area with a concentration of heritage resources.  Preservation is achieved by adopting design guidelines to maintain and improve the character of the district.

Why establish an HCD?

To preserve the attributes that make the Junction special.  It’s an opportunity to share the stories about our neighbourhood, and we have more than a century of history to share.

It’s also about the community taking control of its destiny.  An HCD defines how an area develops, and change is managed in a transparent manner.
